Secretary of Venice Commission: It is Clearly a Step Forward
„it is clearly a step forward and if you can reach a consensus in society on some other issues, I think it will be a very good constitution”, - said the Secretary of the Venice Commission, Thomas Markert in Berlin today where discussion of the draft constitution is underway.
According to Thomas Markert, the Commission evaluates the constitutional reform positively. The secretary of the Venice Commission speaks about the importance of a consensus.
“As you know, the Venice Commission will adopt its opinion on 16 June. We have a very positive attitude to the whole process. We think that the new constitution will be a step forward. It will be important to have a consensus within society, within the political class about the new constitution to make it valid for long-term”, – Thomas Markert said.
As for election of the president and distribution of mandates, the Secretary of the Venice Commission speaks about importance to reach compromise on the issues.
“I think it is very important to reach compromises on those two issues. We have to note that this article does not come into force immediately, but only for the subsequent elections of the president and I think this shows readiness for compromise. As regards distribution of mandates, the discussion is still going on, and I think one should acknowledge the readiness of a current majority to amend the electoral system, so I think this is very positive”, –Thomas Markert said.
