Irakli Kobakhidze: the Autonomous Republic of Adjara independently adopts its Constitution to have it further considered in the Parliament of Georgia

“Pursuant to the legislation of Georgia, the Autonomous Republic of Adjara independently adopts its Constitution after which, with the organic law ratifies the Constitution of Adjara AR”, - the Speaker stated in response to the question about the Constitutional changes regarding the Adjara AR electoral system.

He elucidated that the final decision on Adjara electoral system is to be made by Adjara Supreme Council.

“We are officially unable to interfere in the process, though we keep an eye and we know that the Bill is initiated envisaging election of 15 MPs with proportional system and 6 MPs with majoritarian system. It is up to the Supreme Council. As to the discrepancy, it is admissible. We have another system for the self-governments – three levels of authority. The different elections may be held for Adjara and other municipalities and quite different for the Parliament of Georgia. Hence, the final decision is to be made by the Supreme Council and on this basis, the Constitution will be considered in the Parliament”.
