Irakli Kobakhidze: Presidential Election Rule was the political compromise and it remains valid
“It was a political compromise and remains valid, though in my opinion, it would be preferable in institutional, legal and political terms to have the subject in the Parliament”, - the Speaker stated.
“In my opinion, the procedure established concludes some gaps. As you know, this procedure has been formulated with the will of political compromise and consensus.
Finally, the procedure is legitimate and reflected in the Constitution, though in my personal opinion, the Parliamentary Election Rule would be more expedient in the system stipulated under the Constitution.
However, we have discussed all legal and political aspects and made the decision to reflect the change in the Constitutional Law, namely enlargement of the list of the persons eligible to elect the President – we decided on 300 members of the Election Board instead of 150 MPs.
It was a political compromise and remains valid, though in my opinion, it would be preferable in institutional, legal and political terms to have the subject in the Parliament.
We have discussed it and made the decision to remain the procedure valid which is already endorsed in the text”.
