Irakli Kobakhidze Meets President of Venice Commission
“The constitution of Georgia will not only be legitimate, but a very elaborate document as well, ensuring a very long-term democratic development of Georgia”, - the Speaker, Irakli Kobakhidze stated today after the meeting with the President of the Venice Commission, Gianni Buquicchio in Batumi.
During the meeting with the President of the Venice Commission, the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the Leader of the Parliamentary Majority, Archil Talakvadze and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mikheil Janelidze discussed ongoing constitutional reform in Georgia.
As Irakli Kobakhidze stated after the end of the meeting, the Georgian party thanked Gianni Buquicchio for the opinion presented regarding the Constitutional Amendments. According to him, the Venice Commission and its President did everything to help reach the consensus on the Constitutional Amendments in Georgia. According to Irakli Kobakhidze, the Parliament of Georgia will continue close cooperation with the Venice Commission.
“We thanked the President of the Venice Commission, Mr. Gianni Buquicchio once more for the wonderful opinion the Venice Commission presented regarding the Constitutional Amendments and for his statements as well. The Venice Commission and Mr. Gianni Buquicchio personally did everything to reach the consensus regarding the Constitutional Amendments of Georgia, in the society of Georgia, among the political entities. Overall, we explained to the President of the Venice Commission the reasons behind making the decision in the Parliament of Georgia. The way the decision was made, based on which the final document was developed. We had a very open and frank conversation with the President of the Venice Commission about that. We will continue close cooperation with the Venice Commission so that, in the end, we can agree on the legal system to promote robust democratic development of our country”, - The Speaker said.
According to him, the Constitution of Georgia will be the most elaborate document ensuring long-term democratic development of Georgia.
“The Constitution of Georgia will not only be legitimate, but a very elaborate document as well, ensuring a very long-term democratic development of Georgia. We can definitely say that there is no article in the new document, where we have no progress. It can be said that there is progress with regard to each article and the progress is fundamental. This constitution, this document creates a system ensuring a long-term democratic development of our country and precluding autocracy in the long term. This end is directly reflected in the main law of the country and that is what makes this document legitimate”, Irakli Kobakhidze stated.
